Those people who chose to talk to us and those people who chose to collaborate with us helped us achieve that. “Also, for this programme to work as a testament to them, we needed to get all the details right. One, we needed to feel confident that people were happy with the choices we were making and what we were doing. Willow said: “This is an incredibly important part of the process. The ITV team said the Hill family worked with them when delicately handling on the terrible fate Jacqueline Hill suffered at the hands of Sutcliffe. So, it really felt important to redress the balance.” So often, the victims and the families of the victims are represented in a simplistic way. “The other is the crimes and the details. One focuses on Peter Sutcliffe and who he is. It is definitely part of our social history.
Willow said: “This awful tragedy is one of the biggest crime stories of the last 100 years. Without that, I think you can get a lot of this stuff from a documentary.” I wanted to pitch something with a bigger canvass with crime and the effects of crime. Writer George Kay said: “I was aware, often in TV drama, that when the police leave the room in a police show the camera tends to follow as you are on to the next part of the story. To this end, the team involved with The Long Shadow approached surviving victims and families of those killed to see if they wanted to be involved with the production. ITV has stressed they didn’t want to glamourise any of Sutcliffe’s atrocious acts. George Kay wrote The Long Shadow which took four years of research and involvement of some of the victims’ families.
It will star an ensemble cast including Katherine Kelly, David Morrissey, Toby Jones, Daniel Mays and former Emmerdale acting talent Charley Webb.

This autumn, ITV will broadcast their new series which focuses on the lives of his innocent victims and their families. The Long Shadow has been filmed around the region in locations including Leeds, Wortley, Dewsbury and York among others. Sutcliffe also attempted to murder another seven during that period. He was convicted of murdering 13 women between 19 in Yorkshire. The broadcaster will soon air a seven-part crime drama series following the horrific crimes of Sutcliffe. Some families of Peter Sutcliffe’s victims have been involved in a new ITV drama looking back at the shockwaves caused by his atrocious actions.
